A new website for every festival edition

Organ Vida. An international photography festival whose website we designed and built in-house for every edition from 2017 to 2022, with a location map and open calls managed from the CMS.

The client and the challenge

Organ Vida is an international photography festival in Zagreb. Every edition has its own visual identity, programme, artists and venues across the city, and the festival also runs its open calls (open call, portfolio review) through the website. The organisers needed a site they could fill themselves year after year, in Croatian and English, without a developer for every change.

02

The solution

For every edition from 2017 to 2022 we designed and built a separate site in-house: a custom WordPress theme following that edition’s identity, content through ACF fields (artists, programme, events, venues), an interactive map with pointers and all festival venues managed from the CMS, two languages through Polylang, and the open calls run through the site itself. Once the editions were over, we turned the old sites into static archives: every page in Croatian and English exists as HTML and as Markdown, with no PHP and no database.

03

The result

Every edition has its own recognisable site on its own subdomain, and the 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2022 archives are still online today: fast, maintenance-free and without an old WordPress to patch.

How we got there

  1. 1

    2017 – New Citizens

The first edition site: a custom theme, programme and events through ACF, a venue map and the portfolio review open call.

  2. 2

    2018 – 10th Organ Vida

A new identity, artist and programme pages, the festival at the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb.

  3. 3

    2020 – 11th Organ Vida

The yellow and black identity of Hesitant Images, the same system for artists, programme and venues.

  4. 4

    2022 – 12th Organ Vida

No Tears Left to Cry; past editions are now static archives (HTML + Markdown) on our hosting.

Under the hood

01

A map the festival runs itself

Venues are content in the CMS: each has an address, a description and a pointer on the map. When the festival adds or changes a venue, the map updates itself, with no code change.

02

ACF instead of hard-coded pages

Artists, programme, events and venues are their own content types with ACF fields, so the organisers fill each edition themselves, in both languages (Polylang).

03

Archives without the old WordPress

We moved the old editions to static HTML and Markdown files that nginx serves directly. No PHP and no database means no security patches, and every page keeps its address.
